CFE-FEH. Jesse MALTBY, b. Oct. 5, 1823 (Jesse 5, Jonathan 4, Jos. 3,
Dan. 2, Wm. 1). "He was one of three brothers who came to Illinois,
at an early day from Vermont, I think, and settled in the vicinity of
Petersburg, Ill. One of the three died soon after coming, and I do
not think the other had any family.
He m. three times. His 1st wife was a POTTER; she died when
first child was born. His Grandparents brought him up. Grandmother
POTTER was a sister to Jack Armstrong, whose son Abe Lincoln cleared
of a murder charge in the celebrated 'Almanac' trial at Beardstown.
It was through the POTTERs and ARMSTRONGS that Father knew Lincoln. Also Peter CARTWRIGHT, the great Circuit rider, used frequently
to stop at the POTTER house.
Daddy was the oldest of his father's children. There were 14
children." (Letter from a descendant).
Jesse Maltby m. Rebecca POTTER, April 17, 1844, at Menard Co.,
Ill., where she was b. Jan. 3, 1822, and d. there Apr. 20, 1845.
I have the names of only seven of the children.
Note. The Lincoln-Potter connection is interesting as Abraham
Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hank, descended from John Hank, and there is
a Mortgage, May 18, 1728, "John Maultsby of Philadelphia, yeoman, to
John Hank." Joseph Potter witnessed the m. of John Maultsby's
father, William Maltby of Orston, Notts., in 1689 (Quaker branch).
In 1704, a "Rebecca Potter" of Eastwood, Notts., m. Thomas Maltby
of Felly Abbey, Notts. Eastwood is where the children of Quaker
William Maltby were bapt. 1690-1692-1694-1695.
